I’ve seen this house before

High up above the street

Looming

Maxfied Parrish view of the Lake

Tilting downward

With every step you can feel your feet sliding east.

1919

The Interurban runs from Everett to Tacoma

Metal on the curbs protect the carriage wheels

A family sits on the porch

They feel safe, optimistic,

Modern.

The way it is is the way it will always be,

Forever and ever,

world without end.

But Seattle wasn’t built to last

The streets became unmanageable

The glass cracked and the floors warped

The dark wood became unfashionable and

The job became too big. One of the many owners tried valiantly after Nisqually,

But Seattle wasn’t built to last

The grand houses on the seven hills need constant care

To maintain their grip

And valiance isn’t free.

Booms and busts, feasts and famines

Forever and ever, world without end

Until the last person to leave turns out the lights.

Swimming in the detritus of the 20th century
